Picture discovering a book by your beloved author and finding an unexpected surprise tucked inside. A renowned British writer was recently doing her weekly shop at Tesco when she spotted her novels on the shelves – and decided to do something incredibly thoughtful that left a fan absolutely stunned.
Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling author Gillian McAllister has penned seven acclaimed novels. She’s recognised for her gripping narratives, with even celebrities like Victoria Beckham spotted enjoying her work whilst on holiday.
After launching her latest book Famous Last Words earlier this year, the Tamworth-based writer chose to perform a heartwarming act for an unsuspecting reader.
In a video posted on TikTok, she explained: “POV: you randomly signed a book in Tesco, expecting nothing.”

She shared another clip showing her covertly signing the novel. She explained: “Join me for a sneaky Tesco signing.”
She purchased a pack of pens from the store, selected one of her books and penned a delightful message inside.
The message read: “I signed this in secret! If you find it DM me.”

One person responded: “I love this – what a treat for someone! I’ve just devoured Famous Last Words on holiday, it was superb; could not put it down. Got myself a signed copy from Waterstones – lucky me!”.
Another commented: “I just bought that book, it’s so good! I love your writing style! you are by far my favourite author.
“How exciting would that be,” remarked one user.
“Love this,” another person added. She didn’t anticipate anything from it, but was over the moon when someone purchased her book and penned a heartfelt message.

The note read: “I just found your signed book in Tesco! I did a little weep of joy when I saw it and was super excited. I thought it looked like my local Tesco from the video so I had a cheeky look during my food shop.”
This isn’t the first time that Gillian, 40, has given her fans a surprise. In July, she spent an hour in Tesco to see if anyone would pick up her book.
As a fan was admiring her latest novel, she surprised them by revealing that she is the author.
Gillian’s book can also be found in Sainsbury’s, TG Jones [formerly WH Smith], and on Amazon.
Her other works include Everything But The Truth, Anything You Do Say , No Further Questions, The Evidence Against You, How To Disappear, That Night, Wrong Place Wrong Time and Just Another Missing Person.
