A man was taken to hospital with serious injuries this evening after his car struck a tree. Merseyside Police were called to Northam Close in Southport shortly before 5pm today, Wednesday, August 14.

The man suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital where his condition is not thought to be life-threatening. Northam Close and a small section of Seaton Way were closed following the incident, however all roads have now been reopened. Witnesses reported seeing a huge police presence at the scene and an air ambulance was spotted landing nearby.

A neighbour described how he “ran down the stairs” after hearing the air ambulance above.

They told the ECHO: “I heard the air ambulance land and ran downstairs and out the house.

“I couldn’t see it land but someone said they had to cut down a fence to land. When I got outside I saw the cordon and everyone standing there looking at the car. It’s so awful.”

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “Emergency services were called to an incident of a car colliding with a tree on Northam Close, Southport.

“The male in the car sustained serious injuries and has been taken to hospital where his condition is described as serious but non-life threatening.

“Road closures were put in place, but all roads have now re-opened.”
