Edinburgh’s festival season is in full swing. The Fringe has passed its halfway mark, but other festivals like the Edinburgh International Book Festival and the Edinburgh Film Festival have only just begun. If you’re wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle, here are some alternative events taking place in the city this week.

Pop-up Printmakers exhibition in St James Quarter
Date: 16 – 23 August
Location: 12 Leith Street, EH1 3AS
Edinburgh Printmakers is popping up in the heart of the city this month with a temporary exhibition at St James Quarter. As Edinburgh celebrates its 900th year, the gallery and studio space will be showcasing work made as part of their Castle Mills: Then and Now project. The show is supported by the City of Edinburgh Council, and offers the opportunity to try out some simple printmaking for yourself, and to purchase the publication in which stories of Castle Mills are documented. The celebration of west Edinburgh will be next to the Mòr Bakehouse and has been facilitated by Edinburgh Interfaith Association, The Living Memory Association and the St James Quarter.

DIY Carnival to raise money for Brownies trip to Disney

Girlguiding East Lothian are setting up a DIY Carnival event this Sunday, in order to raise funds to send the Brownies to Disneyland Paris. There will be a variety of games to play including a ring toss, hook a duck and tin can alley, as well as a tombola with a variety of prizes. Tickets for the games can be purchased on the day and the volunteer team have asked that visitors bring cash.

“Scotland’s most adventurous artist-led festival” at Jupiter Artland

Experience Jupiter Artland like never before as their artist-driven festival returns for one night only. With unique experimental music, poetry, and performance and with support from the Edinburgh Art Festival, the sculpture garden is transformed into a magical landscape. Their infamous late night stage, set in the depths of the woods, returns with sets curated by Glasgow club space Ponyboy. Get a chance to explore Jupiter Artland’s exhibitions after dark, and catch creatives in conversation as performance artists process through the gardens.

Edinburgh walk to meet new people
Date: Sunday, 17 August

Location: From Leith Links to Port Seton
Edinburgh locals Giulia and Jaime are organising a coastal walk in order for people in their 20s and 30s to make new friends in the city. They will be walking from Leith to Port Seton, which is set to take around five hours. Attendees are welcome to join the group part of the way through at 1pm by the Musselburgh harbour. The group will be getting the bus back to Edinburgh after reaching the port, and are encouraging people to bring snacks and drinks to keep energy up on the journey.
