A spokesperson for National Highways explained the closure was requested by Kent Fire and Rescue on safety grounds.
They said the service was concerned about a hybrid vehicle which was involved in the crash and had overturned.
A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue confirmed three fire engines attended and the road was temporarily closed whilst its crews managed the scene and isolated the car.
They also said five people were handed over to paramedics.
All three lanes of the A2 were closed, and traffic was stationary, with motorists caught within the closure being turned around from the back of the queue.
By 5.30pm, the road had fully reopened.
