London City Council calls special meeting

  • 16 August 2025

LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) – On Friday afternoon, folks gathered at London Community Center for a special called meeting.

The meeting was called by London City Council to discuss the charges against Mayor Randall Weddle before an impeachment hearing set for September.

The meeting did not last but a few minutes. It consisted of council members of council members sharing a resolution of the amended charges the council could use to impeach the sitting mayor.

“What was the resolution,” asked a citizen.

“I read it,” Council Member Kelly Greene said.

“You are voting on something we don’t even know what it is,” said another citizen.

“I read it,” Greene repeated.

“You said a resolution to KRS,” the citizen said.

“No, I said, a resolution issuing amended charges of misconduct and setting a public hearing pursuant to KRS-83A.040,” Greene said.

When citizens asked for the resolution to be read aloud, Council Member Anthony Ortega said the document could be found online.

“We can just post it online,” he said.

“No, let them read it,” said another person.

“Technically, by KRS, you don’t need to read a resolution,” Ortega said.

When the meeting was adjourned, citizens in attendance booed at the council.

Katie Johnson attended the meeting on behalf of her family.

She said it important for people to hold those in power accountable.

“The city and the county can hold the council accountable without being on the mayors side,” said Johnson. “You don’t have to agree with the mayor. You don’t have to vote for the mayor. You don’t even have to like the mayor to want to hold your council accountable.”

Many people brought signs as they were allowed in this meeting, and a lot of them had a message to share.

One message in particular centered around Doug Harless. He was shot and killed by a London Police Officer on December 23.

Weddle faced significant criticism after the shooting.

William Eversole said these city meetings take light away from a bigger issue.

Eversole held a sign that said “Justice for Doug Harless.” He brought the sign to the meeting.

“I’m not only doing it for him, but for everybody. We all need justice for something,” Eversole said. “I think that seeing somebody get justice for a wrongful doing would kind of help us all.”

One citizen said he is confused by the council’s actions. He added that London has had issues in the past.

“It’s nothing but a witch hunt to me personally. I don’t even understand how they keep on. ‘Oh the mayor is doing this. Oh the mayor is doing that.’ Well if you look at the history, we had problems here before this mayor even came around,” said another citizen.

Weddle posted to social media the public hearing regarding a possible impeachment is scheduled for at 9 a.m. on Sept. 5.
