David Moyes will be looking to utilise Jack Grealish’s versatility this season after hinting that the 29-year-old could play in several positions.
Speaking to the media ahead of their Premier League curtain-raiser against Leeds United, Moyes said, “I think Jack can play in several positions. I think he can play in midfield, as well, He doesn’t give the ball away very often, but my aim is to get Jack in positions where he will get goals and assists for us.
“Look, it’s a big challenge for Jack, as well. I’m looking forward to see how he responds to it.”
When asked whether the star signing will be seen donning the Everton shirt at Elland Road, Moyes joked, “He looks the same, big calves.
“You need to turn up and find out [whether he starts]. That’s what everyone needs to do.”
If Grealish does end up getting the manager’s nod to start, he will be looking to replicate the performance from his previous trip to Yorkshire, where he assisted two of Manchester City’s goals.
The Scottish manager also spoke about his former player Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has now joined Leeds United on a free transfer after his contract expired with Everton.
In the pre-match press conference, Moyes confirmed that the striker’s financial demands proved to be “too much” for the club and it was opted to let him go.
“I’m pleased for Dom, I didn’t really get a chance to work deeply with him; he picked up an injury, I think I had one or two games with him,” Moyes said.
“We found the financials just too much at the time, so we just had to move on. I’m pleased he’s got himself sorted out.”
Everton begin their Premier League campaign against Leeds United on Sunday.

Moyes was very sour at the presser due to the media already knowing about things that he thought should never have come out publically – particularly the news of Branthwaite’s training ground injury which rules him out.

Bournemouth have opened talks to sign Scotland winger Ben Doak from Liverpool.
The Reds want £25m for the 19-year-old.
Could he do a job for us? Yes he’s better than, um, well, better than um, whoever we can rope in and play out of position, so yes he can do a job for us, but our great recruitment team will probably haggle, and try to reduce the fee and he’ll go elsewhere.

We have a right back in O’Brien. I think he’s been decent at right back – when he’s played centre half he’s looked awful. His positional sense is horrific in the middle.

To be fair, James, O’Brien really was decent as a RB when Moyes played him there.
As a CB he seems to be anything between (a) Champions League quality and (b) your assessment of him as being awful. Personally, I think he’s neither (yet).
As a long term RB though, he is a weird solution. I heard some commentators say he provided an unorthodox attacking outlet because we could hit a big diagonal to him and he’d obviously win the header against a winger / conventional full-back.
With the ball he’s not bad either. But like I say, a weird solution as a “proper” RB.

James I agree to an extent.
He is certainly no Tark’s nor Jarred yet at CB but he does a solid job at RB in the Kyle Walker mould i.e. quick and aggressive and gets up and down the pitch.
Having said that I really like the look of the Norwich RB who I watched for 90 minutes the other day and his passing and movement was top class.
I think the RB and RW choices need to be complimentary in the Baines-Pienaar way although right now I would settle for a body for the RW slot.

James,
Jake has performed very well at right back. He also did well at centre back.
A few wobbles occasionally in both positions, but name me a player who doesn’t have them.
I think describing his positional sense as horrific, although a personal view, is a bit harsh from what I’ve watched.

I actually like O’Brien as a right back at the moment. He can defend very well, because he is a cb by trade he can help the shape of the team morph somewhat when either in or out of possession, and he’s a massive physical presence and is decent in the opposition box too. Plus, being much bigger than the traditional right back, he adds more height to what is already a big team when conceding a corner.
I don’t feel right back is the priority several are making it out to be.
Just an opinion!

For Moyes to say there are higher priorities than RB worries me. O’Brien did look good there, but is that really a sustainable plan? Our recognised RBs are Seamus and Patto… Plus O’Brien is surely a better option for covering Branthwaite (or Tark) than Keane? I agree O’Brien didn’t look wonderful at CB in those friendlies, but Keane’s lack of pace makes it very easy to hurt us. And that’s before you factor in how often he drops a clanger.

Ive just come back from Turkey, Paul K, and one of the things I found most depressing, was that with most people now using plastic, even the Turks, dont really want to haggle anymore.
I also spoke to a few who had complete disdain for what they referred to as a very dangerous refugee problem, but I was more worried for the bored shopkeepers, who just dont seem to have the same energy anymore.
They reminded me of myself with regards the football, because since the introduction of VAR, amongst other things, I just cant seem to get as excited anymore.
Its the same everywhere apparently because according to the Turks, it was only invented to help Galatasary, win the league!

Listening to Moyes today, he was looking for massive wages, and I agree he’s definitely on less money than we offered, and Leeds were never in his plans, beggars can’t be choosers sadly.

The Manager playing his cards close to his chest and someone will be in trouble for the Branthewaite leak.
He certainly put them on the table over DCL, despite his kind eulogy he wanted to bleed the club, I wish him well but glad he has gone. Good luck with Leeds ? ?
Beto got a huge defensive thumbs up and support from the Manager, who respects his hard work and wiling to learn. Beto will score alot of goals this will really be his breakout season.
I don’t think it will be long before that right side is sorted, plus a number 6 brought in.

McAtee for £20 million, and yet Liverpool want £25 million for Douk?
They are absolutely brilliant at getting top money for young players our neighbours, especially when compared with Everton.
Davies – free transfer, Kenny – free transfer and DCL – free transfer.
Liverpool sold Nico Williams who was comparable to Jonjoe for about £20 million, and are now looking to get another £25 for a kid who has played a few games in senior football?
The kid might be special, he might even be worth a punt, but my only hope is that Everton, can become as ultra-professional, and ruthless as our neighbours..

If Mykolenko is out too, would you go three at the back with Garner and McNeil on the sides?
Notice Liverpool have their first choice eleven out tonight – not a calf strain amongst them. Got to be sheer luck hasn’t it? Must be great – and as we know, they know no other reality.

The RS got £15m from Bournemouth for Jordan Ibe in 2016. Which was daylight robbery.
They then got £23.5m from Sheff Utd for Rhian Brewster in 2020. Which was grand larceny.
They just keep doing it and for that reason alone I would swerve Ben Doak. They rarely sell good players nowadays. Sheedy, Morrisey, Beardsley etc were decades ago.

Tony, Neco Williams is miles better than JJK and their careers seem to confirm that. The RS do trade off the name etc but these young players have performed on loan at high standards and in international football. Thats generally why they command bigger fees. They do also sell or release low standard players for peanuts

Will be a tough game there Monday. If we had our full defence I’d be relaxed.
The thought of Keane in a bouncing Elland Rd scares me.
Is myko fit ?
Are we looking at 3 cbs ?
Mcneil & Garner at wingback?
Get 100m player for next to nothing and still we are looking at Crisis mode before a ball been kicked.
Wouldn’t be Everton if we weren’t fighting something or someone.

Jonjoe Kenny, was capped at every level except the seniors for England, Robert (under twenty World Cup winner) and if he was welsh, Im certain he would have a lot of senior caps as well.
I dont think there is much between him and Nico Williams, maté and definitely not £20 million.
Kenny has had a decent career in Germany, since he left Everton, for nothing, (Everton had him sold for around £5/6 million at one stage, until Brands allegedly wanted a little bit more money) and has now moved to Greece.
Maybe Williams, would get a better move if he left Forest now, but I genuinely thought Kenny, was a better player than Williams, (subjective) and we should have definitely received a decent fee for him, instead of letting him run down his contract and walking out the door on a free.

Tony (#20 and since) you’re 100% correct and the canker still engulfing us goes back decades, is more noxious than Japanese knot-weed, and even harder to remove.
The reality I describe has meant that the world-wide top-range football clubs, players and agents have decades ago seen us as on a par with the likes of Espanyol in Spain, but much better able to pay top-dollar for dross on the field, and they’ve taken full advantage of our self-serving-only leadership throughout nigh on the entire Premiership.
Friedkin needs to realise this and I’m sure he already realises how pernicious the PSR system is to any club now with a mind to spend like the chosen few who still dominate as trophy winners.
What he can do about it is anyone’s guess but his task dwarfs Moyes’s.
Hope springs eternal they say……. unless it’s in a bed of JKW I say.

You need to contextualise Jake OBriens performances at centre back. Either he has had a lesser right-back to play with or a lesser centre-back partner.
A steady run with a decent / proper right-back and I think he would have less compensating to do and so will be fine.

David 28 – no-one seems willing to contemplate that Calvert-Lewin might have actually wanted to leave us. And by ‘us’ I mean a very collective us.
Whether you agree or not, he might believe he was played up front in some dreadfully defensive teams, mismanaged by the medical team, rushed back into the side repeatedly, taunted by fans for his fashion choices, had his mental health publicly questioned by his manager, and had his wife abused by online trolls.
Maybe he just wanted to get out. I wouldn’t have believed it because he never said anything but good things about Everton and Evertonians, but leaving without a deal agreed elsewhere does smack of a guy being prepared to take his chances rather than stay.
The glee from some fans in him struggling for a team and then turning up at a newly promoted team isn’t a good look, in my opinion. And shows a lack of any kind of collective self reflection.
He’s made the decision to move on and show some class in his words, and a portion of our fans would be well advised to do the same.

To Leeds ( one yo yoing year on year )
Fair enough if you feel your time is done and move on.
To be without a Club at his stage of his career was a bit strange.
Everton, by Moyes statement wanted him to stay.
I always liked him, tried hid best, put his body on the line, gsve his all, in some terrible teams and times.

To Tonys point look at Jordan Ibe and Brewster sold for 10s of millions between them based on “potential” one nos still in his 20s is playing for 400 a week in that 6 a side baller league, the other just released in a free transfer. Not a fan of his by any means but Tom Davies accomplished much more than either as did Kieran Dowell and JJK

I think some blues would love to believe he sacked his agent while saying through tears… you made me leave the club I loved, we should have taken the lower wage, you said I was too good for Everton.
It could be true, but it’s probably just a bit comfortable for Evertonians to believe. Big life decisions tend to be a bit more nuanced.

he wasn’t exactly a charity case though was he Ernie. What was it, over a hundred thousand pounds a week for five years? He did very well out of Everton, and then ran his contract down cos he wanted to maximise his financial position even more. As was his right. But if he left a slightly sour taste in the mouth that’s not surprising given what’s gone on. We put him on a monster contract, didn’t get much back, and he then made the decision to put the transfer fee in his back pocket at a time when we were fending off 777. Must admit I’m glad to see the back of him.

Looks like another possible right winger might slip away before we’d even heard about him. Fabrizio Romano says Nico Gonzalez of Juventus is an Everton target — no press leaks on that one — but Atlético Madrid has come in and opened their own talks with the Old Lady, and of course they can offer Champions League footy.
Nico can play a bit. Argentine international, very quick. Would be a nice get if we could.
Romano also reports Wolves will beat Everton to right back Jackson Tchatchoua from Hellas Verona with a £10 million offer.

Everybody wants star (read big money) forwards AMs wingers. How hard can it be to fill one of the more mundane – but still important – positions, it’s not like Coleman got Injuried last week like Branthwaite, it’s been at least 2 ‘kin years if not more.
Moyes used to like his players to have a value for money ‘Utility’ mode, if a RB proves impossible…how hard can it be ffs…he’ll sign a centre half and push O’Brien out wide..
How hard?
Very, apparently.

Ernie 33# Exactly right. We don’t know what DCL demands were or for that matter what Everton were actually offering (who knows? could have been less than he was already on!) What we do know is what you reminded us on, abuse of his wife, derision of his choices outside football, and abuse on the pitch playing as a lone attacker for Sean Dyche. Let me say that again, a lone attacker for Sean Dyche. The man who was sacked because of the his inability to get the best out of the players we had. David Moyes proved that.
For years he has been the ONLY striker we have had and scored some beauts. His injury record in the past few is not great, but again, the pressure on him to return as the only forward was immense. It didn’t help, and probably contributed.
He is gone, Its the best thing for him and us, but he served us well. The stats might say one thing but they do not show the quality of the manager he was playing for, or the players around him that were supposed to provide chances. The strikers life is a game of averages, get three chances, score one. We were lucky to get single chances in most games under Dyche. Remember that?

Not ALL, Jay. Not all.
We are a mediocre team pursuing really good players or prospects.
On most we’ll be outbid or just not as attractive. But if we get one or two out of ten, job done. We got Grealish and KDH, and we will get help on the right.
But I doubt right away. More likely on loan at the end of the window. And we won’t fill every vacancy in one window. Because we’re going for the good ‘uns, thank you. No more desperate punts like El Ghazi and Rondon and Maupay and Lindstrom and Broja. No more bodies just to fill holes.
Let’s see what the process produces.

Interesting that the confidence is still there about doing the necessary transfer business before the deadline in 16 days.
Transfers to bring in a right winger and right back are not nice to have. They would address serious gaps in the balance and depth of the squad – and it is clear Moyes feels the same way.
I can understand that it might be challenging to sign a creative and pacey right winger – they are sought after in the market. The offer of European football is an attraction factor. But it is really poor that we have failed to sign a right back and will rely on a centre-back and a 36 year old to start the season.
My guess is that we were confident in doing the Dibling deal at our valuation and spent too long trying to get the deal done in that financial framework. Now we have pivoted away to other targets, we are finding that other clubs have progressed with deals for these players.
it is unfortunately more likely that we will need to compromise on the quality of the player to fill these positions. Or we try to manage with what we have until January.
We could of course bid more for Dibling – go big or go home given our transfer strategy for the summer seems to have been constructed around that deal.
