During a recent IRED (Infrastructure Regeneration and Economic Development) committee, it was confirmed that West Dunbartonshire Council would retain just 17 crossing patrol locations.
Councillor Lauren Oxley said she had received a number of concerns from parents in the Dalmuir area who are worried about the removal of crossing patrols around the local primary schools.
She also called for further road safety education to be made available in schools.
Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Oxley said: “[The parents] state that while communication was sent out ensuring safe walking routes to school as a priority, there was no information contained on what actual action will take place to ensure that.
“Can you give me some information about what work will be done within school and in partnership with schools such as increased road safety education on top of road safety plans and any support for children who walk to school unaccompanied.”

Chief officer Gail MacFarlane confirmed that each school has a school travel plan.
Ms MacFarlane said: “They will liaise with the road service in relation to anything that is identified that looks as though it could be a physical measure implemented be that traffic calming or a formal crossing.
“They would liaise with the parents, the teachers, the pupils who review and update that school travel plan. We will then review anything that is presented to us to discuss but at this time we have not received anything from the schools.
“As schools are only going back this week, we would not anticipate that we would have heard anything just yet but as we receive that we will work with them to see if there is a solution.”
Councillor Lauren added: “In light of the reduction of school crossing patrollers, could you liaise with education officers to see if they could do additional road safety sessions in schools.
“I am worried something happens and it happens when it is too late and we could have put an intervention or prevention in there.”
