European leaders have welcomed US President Donald Trump’s recent meeting with the Russian leader in Alaska, describing it as a step toward halting Russia’s war against Ukraine and moving closer to a just and lasting peace. The statement was released on August 16 by the European Commission.
“Leaders welcomed President Trump’s efforts to stop the killing in Ukraine, end Russia’s war of aggression, and achieve just and lasting peace,” the statement read.
The joint declaration was signed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and European Council President António Costa.

The declaration stressed that Ukraine must receive “ironclad security guarantees” to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“We welcome President Trump’s statement that the US is prepared to give security guarantees. The Coalition of the Willing is ready to play an active role,” the statement reads.
They underlined that no restrictions should be imposed on Ukraine’s armed forces or on its cooperation with international partners, adding that Russia cannot veto Ukraine’s path to NATO or the European Union.

Following the European leaders’ declaration, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy commented on the day’s developments.
“Today after the conversation with President Trump we additionally coordinated positions with European leaders. I thank the partners who are helping. Today there is an important statement by European leaders that strengthens our position. We continue working together: Europeans, Americans, and all in the world who want peace and calm in international relations,” he said.
Earlier, it was reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a call with US President Donald Trump following Trump’s meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Discussions focused on coordinating positions ahead of potential further talks.
