Pacemaking is not always as straightforward as it looks according to Robert Havlin, who will do his best to assist Ombudsman in Wednesday’s Juddmonte International on Birr Castle.
Havlin has ample experience filling those duties for his principal trainers John and Thady Gosden, including in York’s showpiece event. However, he is not expecting to emulate Richard Kingscote, who stole a march on another Gosden-trained star in Field Of Gold to spring a 150-1 shock on Qirat in the Sussex Stakes.
“People think you can do 12-second furlongs the whole way but it’s not as simple as that,” the jockey said after riding Just Call Me Angel to victory at Epsom on Friday.
