Celtic’s path in the Premier Sports Cup has thrown up a familiar face. The Hoops have been drawn away to Partick Thistle in the quarter-finals, where they will come up against their former defender Mark Wilson, now in charge at Firhill.

The tie will take place on the weekend of September 20–21, with the Jags set to host Brendan Rodgers’ side. It’s a Glasgow derby of sorts, but the real subplot lies in the dugouts. Wilson, once a Celtic regular, is now aiming to cause an upset against the club where he made his name.

Wilson joined Celtic from Dundee United in January 2006 under Gordon Strachan. The full-back quickly established himself as a reliable option on either side of defence, known for his composure, tidy passing, and professionalism. Though injuries often disrupted his progress, Wilson remained a trusted figure during his time at the club.

He went on to win four league titles, two Scottish Cups, and two League Cups during his six-and-a-half years at Celtic Park. Supporters will remember him for his consistency, his understanding of the demands of playing for Celtic, and his part in multiple Glasgow Derby battles during the late 2000s and early 2010s. One where he knocked out Sasa Papac with the power of his shot as he scored the winning goal.

Now, Wilson stands on the opposite side of the touchline. Hosting Celtic at Firhill presents a huge challenge but also a chance to test themselves against Scotland’s most successful club.

For Celtic, the target is straightforward: defend their trophy and push on towards another Hampden appearance. But the added narrative of facing one of their own gives this tie extra spice. Firhill will be buzzing, and Celtic know all too well that former players often find a way of making these occasions tricky.
