Police including armed cops swooped on a town after reports that a man who was believed to have a knife was ‘behaving aggressively’ in a park.

Police and paramedics were scrambled initially to Victoria Park in Denton, Tameside, at 6.40pm on Saturday (August 16, 2025). Officers tracked down a bare-chested suspect nearby at the junction of Ashton Road and Hyde Road.

Video from the scene showed armed cops in attendance and also a suspect in the rear of a police van. A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police later confirmed that a 30-year-old man was detained and transported to hospital for assessment.

An investigation into the incident is underway but as yet as there are no reports of anyone suffering injuries and no knife has been located, according to the spokeswoman.

Pictures and video from the scene being shared on social media show an ambulance and a number of police cars and vans, as well as riot-trained Tactical Aid Unit officers, at the junction of Ashton Road and Hyde Road. A section of Ashton Road was closed for a time but the road was re-opened later in the evening.

The GMP spokeswoman said: “A 30-year-old male has been detained and taken to hospital, where he remains. Local officers are in the area to provide visible reassurance to the community and speak to any witnesses. It is not believed any members of the public have suffered injuries in relation to this incident.”

In an un-related incident, firefighters responded to a gas leak on nearby At Annes Road at around 5.30pm on Saturday. Crews used detectors to make the area safe and left after about an hour, according to a spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.
