Charlton secured a well-earned point on the road as they shared a goalless draw with Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday afternoon.

A solid away performance saw the Addicks go toe-to-toe with the much-fancied Robins in an evenly-fought contest.

The hosts started on the front foot with plenty of attacking intent which Charlton more than stood up to.

Anis Mehmeti fired narrowly wide of the left-hand upright from outside the box early on, which proved to be the biggest threat of the first 45 as Nathan Jones’ men began to grow into the half.

On 18 minutes, a promising breakaway saw Tyreece Campbell stream forward, laying off for Sonny Carey who sliced a cross/shot just wide of the post and, although that proved to be the closest the visitors would come in the first half, the Addicks could be happy going into the break off the back of a solid showing.

A good start to the second period saw Charlton come close in the 51st minute when Rob Apter played in on the right-hand side of the box, forcing Radek Vitek into a low save to palm away the danger.

At the other end six minutes later, the dangerous Mehmeti rattled the woodwork when a fortunate deflection took the ball into his path in a good position, with his effort bouncing off the top of the crossbar.

Just after the hour mark, it was Charlton’s turn to hit the woodwork, almost benefitting from their own slice of good fortune when sub Miles Leaburn’s cross, which was aimed towards Campbell, was diverted towards his own goal by George Tanner’s desperate intervention, only kept out by Vitek tipping it onto the post.

The Addicks were getting on top as the game ticked towards the halfway point of the second period, but they could not find that killer chance during the key period.

As the game wore on, the pendulum began to swing from one end of the pitch to the other. Zak Vyner hooked over from close range following a corner in the 86th minutes for the hosts, while Charlton came close when Harvey Knibbs’ effort was smothered by the keeper in the first minute of added on time.

A draw was probably the fair result on a hot day in the south west, but the visitors can be very pleased with what was an excellent performance on the road with a point and another clean sheet to take back to London.

Jones’ men return to action next Saturday as they host Leicester City at The Valley.
