Julian Fellowes has teased the possibility of a crossover between Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age.
The writer created both shows, and it looks like the recently-wrapped up season 3 of The Gilded Age might have been laying the foundations for them to collide.
The show saw Bertha and George’s daughter Gladys marry Hector, the Duke of Buckingham – although it has caused some major divisions between them.
Speaking to TVLine, Fellowes stated that linking the characters of The Gilded Age to the United Kingdom is a potential path to a crossover.
“Obviously there’s an opportunity to [stage a crossover], because they are both in England,” he explained.

“Things like the shooting season or whatever would incorporate many great houses for all of these families, as they would travel around England.
“We can bring about a conjunction whenever we wish, really, but we haven’t got one planned yet, so we’ll have to see.”
However, if a crossover were to happen, it’s highly unlikely that we’ll see the actors playing the characters we’re used to.

The Gilded Age is set in the late 1800s, while Downton Abbey began in 1912 and has since moved into the 1930s.
Also, the upcoming third Downton movie is titled Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, strongly hinting that it’s a farewell to the cast.
If a crossover does happen, it seems plausible to suggest that we could see younger versions of some of our Downton favourites, played by new actors.
The Gilded Age is available to stream on Sky and NOW. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale will be released in cinemas in September.
