A key route in Cardiff has been blocked after a large sinkhole appeared in the road. Maes-Y-Coed road in the Heath area of the city is closed in both directions after a sinkhole opened up on Sunday morning, August 17.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service put a cordon in place shortly after emergency services were alerted to the hole. Traffic monitoring site Inrix reports that the road is closed between the A469 Caerphilly Road and Armoury Drive, near the Lidl supermarket.

One motorist who was travelling from Roath to Caerphilly on Sunday morning narrowly avoided the hole. He was driving past before the emergency services arrived. Never miss a Cardiff story by signing up to our daily newsletter here

He said: “It looked like it has just appeared and we were lucky to notice it and managed to avoid it.

“We pulled up so we could raise the alarm and called 101. The hole appeared to be very deep and we could hear water running.

“Hopefully they will be able to get it fixed as quickly as possible because it is a very busy road.”
