Three people have been killed and eight left injured in a mass shooting in New York. Active shooters opened fire in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Police say they responded to multiple 911 calls to a restaurant on Franklin Avenue at approximately 3.27am local time on Sunday, August 17

Police found multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds , aged between 27 and 61 – including eight men and three women. Three people have so far died – a 27-year-old man, a 35-year-old man and another man of an unknown age.

Eight people have been taken to hospital. Police say multiple shooters were involved and 36 shell casings have so far been found. No arrests have been made after the shootings at the Taste of the City Lounge.

New York Police Department commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters three men were killed. The shooting comes amid a record low year for gun violence in New York City

“We have the lowest numbers of shooting incidents and shooting victims seven months into the year that we’ve seen on record in the city of New York,” Ms Tisch said. “Something like this is, of course, thank God an anomaly and it’s a terrible thing that happened this morning, but we’re going to investigate and get to the bottom of what went down.”

She said officers are investigating at least 36 shell casings from the lounge, as well as a firearm that was discovered in a nearby street, describing it as “a terrible shooting that occurred in the city of New York”.

Residents were urged to avoid the area. New York’s emergency management office has warned of traffic delays, road closures, mass transit disruptions, and a heavy emergency personnel presence near Franklin Avenue and President Street.

The latest mass shooting comes just over a week after chaos erupted in New York when a gunman opened fire in Times Square. Three people were shot at the tourist hotspot on August 9. Gunfire rang out about 1.20 am EDT at West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue. A 19-year-old man was shot in the foot, a 65-year-old man was hit in the left leg and an 18-year old woman was grazed in the neck, police say.

The victims were admitted to hospital in stable condition. A 17-year-old suspect has since been arrested.

Police have not named the suspect. The Times Square shooting erupted during a fight outside a Raising Cane’s chicken restaurant, according to the NYPD.

Footage shared on social media showed people frantically fleeing the area as police attended the wounded. Police said there had been a verbal dispute between the shooter and one of the victims. The firearm used in the attack was recovered from the scene.
