The finest curry house in England has been revealed. Whilst major cities across the UK boast countless curry establishments, the top spot actually belongs to a small market town.
The recent English Curry Awards 2025 crowned the nation’s premier curry houses in each region, with both intimate and expansive restaurants claiming prizes for the genuine and flavoursome meals they dish up to punters.
And it’s official: England’s premier curry house sits in the North East. Facing fierce rivalry, the Curry Restaurant of the Year accolade went to Sher Khan in Alnwick, Northumberland, reports the Express. It also won the prize for the North East’s finest curry house.
Curry establishments nationwide were recognised by region and city, but Sher Khan claimed the overall crown.

The awards bash occurred in Birmingham this week, with 2025 marking its 14th year. Curry houses have become fundamental to numerous British towns and cities.
Alnwick locals have sung the praises of this neighbourhood gem. One reviewer said: “The best curry we have had in years. Service was excellent and the staff super friendly. I’d totally recommend for great food and a relaxed sophisticated night out. Great value for money.”
Another said: “The service was excellent with all the waiting staff being pleasant and attentive. They made really good recommendations and we appreciated that. The food was all excellent. We ordered a fairly wide range of items from the menu and it was all delicious. Reasonably priced too.”
The extensive menu at this eatery showcases Indian favourites, all reasonably priced. Appetisers can be bought for as little as £3.95, whilst main courses average around £10.
In the North West, Aroma Asian Restaurant in Burnley claimed the top honour, whilst Khandan Restaurant in Wellington secured the accolade for Yorkshire and Humber.
Spice Valley in Norwich was crowned Curry Restaurant of the Year in the East of England, whilst Everest Lounge in Market Harborough claimed the prize for the East Midlands.
Meanwhile, Lavang in Solihull was declared the finest in the West Midlands and Spice Route in Andover was crowned the finest in the South East. The accolade in the South West went to Mattancherry in Taunton.
Awards were also handed out for the finest curry houses of the year in major cities across England. London’s finest is Masala Inn in Bexleyheath. In Manchester, the prize went to Spice n Spirits.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s is Sanskrit, Leeds’ is Delhi Wala Food, Liverpool’s is Da Mount Gurkha, Sheffield’s is Prithiraj, Nottingham’s is Anoki Restaurant, and Southampton’s is Padharo Indian Restaurant.
