A Japanese fashion brand is opening up its first Bristol store at Cabot Circus, according to a planning application which has been submitted to Bristol City Council. Uniqlo, which specialises in casual and comfortable women’s, men’s and kid’s clothing, has asked for permission to install illuminated signage in the former Topshop on Brigstowe Street.
According to the Uniqlo website’s official store locator, this Bristol store will not only be the first in the city, but the only one in the South West of England.
In the plans, which can be viewed publicly on the Council’s Planning Portal, diagrams show the Uniqlo signage with its red and white branding clearly visible. It will be located at Unit 25 – in what was previously Bristol’s beloved Topshop and Topman store, which closed down in 2021.
This was par of a larger closure of Topshop stores across the country, after the brand was bought by ASOS.
Uniqlo, a subsidiary of multinational retail holding company, Fast Retailing Co Ltd, was founded in 1984 in Japan, with the name said to have been a shortened version of ‘unique clothing’. However, during the registration of the name, the ‘C’ for clothing was misread as a ‘Q’, and so, with the business owners liking the mix-up, it was known as Uniqlo from then on out.
At time of writing, Uniqlo boasts more than 30,000 employees and, as of November 2024, there are reportedly some 2,541 Uniqlo stores worldwide. The first UK store opened back in 2001 in London, and there are now around 20 stores across the country.
These are located in London, Manchester, Liverpool, and there’s even one due to open at The Bullring in Birmingham ‘soon’.
