Sheffield United are weighing up an offer for Sturm Graz right-back Max Johnston, according to EFL Analysis.
Sheffield United opted for rebuild this summer after their failed promotion push in 2024/25. However, it has gone far from as hoped for SUFC.
Since replacing Chris Wilder with Ruben Selles, the Blades have pulled off minimal recruitment with glaring gaps in the squad and star players like Gustavo Hamer still widely expected to leave. As such, Selles pulled no punches when quizzed on transfers and the start to the season after Saturday’s loss to Swansea City.

One of several areas in need of strengthening is right-back, and it seems one man on the radar is Max Johnston.
According to a report from EFL Analysis, Sheffield United are showing interest in a deal for the Sturm Graz full-back, who has been the subject of significant transfer interest from Championship sides.
Derby County have seen two bids rejected, according to separate reports, and are preparing a third. Watford have also been keen, and remain so.
SUFC and Italian side Bologna are now in the chase too though, so Johnston is not short of options if he is to move on from the Austrian champions this summer.
The right-back options at Sheffield United
As can be shown above, Sheffield United might have a handful of players who are able to step in at right-back, but for a side with ambitions of fighting for Championship promotion, there will be questions.
Femi Seriki performed well when called upon last season and looks likely to have held a place in the side for this season. Jamie Shackleton is a solid utility player at the level, but he continues to struggle with injuries.

Mihael Polendakov has been one of the unseen AI-inspired signings from the new SUFC hierarchy, so time will tell if he gets opportunities to perform for the first-team. Youngster Sam Curtis is another for the future who has served as Seriki’s cover early on.
Wider issues at Bramall Lane
The ongoing debacle over Sheffield United transfers are indicative of the wider issues at the club. Questionable decisions have been made by the ownership and club hierarchy, and they’re yet to really show any signs of being able to improve fortunes at Bramall Lane.
It is setting up to be a huge couple of weeks before the end of the transfer window, otherwise the Blades could find themselves far below last season’s efforts – which wasn’t deemed good enough for Wilder to keep his job.
Not only do SUFC need to spend well to back Selles, but they need to show that there is a clear vision for the future, and one that has the potential to bring success.
