Sony will host a PS5 livestream in late September which could be a PS Showcase but is more likely to be a State of Play. That’s according to Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, who has a strong track record of being accurate about these things.
Speaking as part of a livestream earlier today, Grubb invited websites to report on the rumour, such is his confidence:
“I’ll point out what I’ve heard, and this one I feel comfortable saying, yeah, you can go write headlines about this if you want: [Sony’s] planning a State of Play, or maybe a PS Showcase, but probably a State of Play, for the end of September, or before the end of September. So we’re going to get updates from Sony here pretty soon.”
Grubb’s comments came as part of a bigger conversation about live service shooter Fairgames, following rumours of its cancellation this weekend.
As part of that story, Michael Pachter – the source of the speculation – confirmed he misspoke and doesn’t actually know the status of the project.
But Grubb admitted he isn’t sure whether Fairgames will appear during September’s proposed State of Play, and thinks it could also come too early for the likes of Marvel’s Wolverine, which was revealed in 2021.
He speculated the previously rumoured Metroidvania-style God of War might appear during the event, but doesn’t have any strong sources either way.

We suspect a State of Play would be used to further promote Ghost of Yotei, but on the first-party front, Sony slate is looking a little light beyond that.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is likely still well over a year away, and we haven’t heard a peep out of Guerrilla’s long-in-development online adaptation of Horizon.
To be fair, though, PlayStation’s operated in this fashion all generation long: it usually only has one or two first-party titles it’s actively promoting, before it moves onto whatever’s next. So, we suspect a September livestream would be worth tuning into, if only to see where it’s focus will be for 2026.
