The ECHO has interviewed people on the streets of Liverpool for its TikTok page for over two years to get their opinions on the best aspects of Liverpool and the Liverpool City Region.

Video reporters Alice Walker and Ian Croll, along with Showbiz reporter Ryan Paton have asked people in Merseyside a list of questions including best area, best cafe, best football team and best pub.

When interviewing people in the city, there was one pub that came out on top above all the others. We previously published the best pub in January 2024, and the answer has remained the same since. Some newer entries over the last year include The White Hart in the city centre and Metrocola on Hope Street.

Some incredible venues were mentioned, such as The Dispensary on Renshaw Street in the City Centre, which has been around since 1857 and The Liver Vaults on Gilead Street in Kensington.

Over the years, the pub that was recommended the most by interviewees by far was Peter Kavanagh’s on Egerton Street in the city centre.

Built in 1844, the ECHO previously reported how the Egerton Street boozer, which became a licensed “beer house” in 1854, has also been known as The Liver, The Liver Hotel, The Grapes, Peter’s Hotel and Peter’s during its long history.

It was given a famous and classical refit back in 1929 when Peter Kavanagh, himself, commissioned Scottish painter Eric Harald Macbeth Robertson to produce murals based on the work of Charles Dickens (scenes from The Pickwick Papers are in The Pickwick Room – the front room) and William Hogarth (scenes of drinking and merriment are in the Hogarth Room – the back room).
