You don’t need a passport to enjoy these holiday destinations…
Why jet abroad when the UK has some of the most jaw-dropping road trips on the planet? From the wild Highlands of Scotland to the rolling fells of the Lake District and the rugged Welsh coastline, new research has crowned the nation’s most beautiful drives – and they’re closer than you think.
Top of the list is the Kendal to Keswick route in the Lake District, voted Britain’s most stunning drive by nearly a third of motorists. The 30-mile stretch along the A591 winds past Windermere and the Lakeland fells, offering scenery so dramatic it’s basically a moving postcard.
Hot on its heels is Loch Lomond to Glencoe (29%), a cinematic Scottish Highlands route that takes in Argyll Forest Park and glittering lochs before opening out into Glencoe’s world-famous valley. Meanwhile, Wales’s Coastal Way clinched third place (23%), proving the Welsh coastline can more than hold its own when it comes to epic views.
Other favourites making the cut include the twists of Cheddar Gorge (21%), the tranquil lanes of the New Forest (20%), and the Western Loop in the Lake District (18%), which winds past Eskdale, Wast Water and Buttermere. For thrill-seekers, Snake Pass in the Pennines and Snowdonia’s Llanberis Pass also made the top ten.
And it’s official – Britain really does love the open road. A whopping 92% of drivers say the UK has some of the best road trips in the world, while nearly two-thirds admit they’d rather explore closer to home than face the airport queues. On average, Brits squeeze in seven road trips a year, covering 93 miles a time, with partners, kids and mates topping the list of favourite passengers.
But it’s not just about the views – road trip essentials matter too. According to the poll, no glovebox is complete without water, crisps, sandwiches, travel sweets and a flask of tea or coffee, while four in ten drivers admit plotting in the nearest service stations is as important as choosing the playlist. Blankets, wet wipes and chocolate also made the must-have list – proving comfort (and sugar) is king on Britain’s roads.
George Wallis, Head of Marketing at Isuzu UK, who commissioned the survey, said: “With 92% saying the UK has some of the world’s best road trips, it’s clear we don’t need to go far to be blown away. From Cheddar Gorge to Llanberis Pass, the UK has it all. And with the Isuzu D-Max built for rugged reliability, you’ll never be stuck in a jam – unless it’s on your scone!”
So whether you fancy chasing waterfalls in the Highlands, hugging the Cornish coast, or cruising through the Lake District, the ultimate British road trip is waiting – and it doesn’t even need a boarding pass.
