Sheffield Wednesday cut ties with the youngster at the end of last season. SWFC decided not to hand him an extension earlier this summer.

Mbaya, 18, became a free agent in late June and has since been weighing up his options as a free agent. He has recently been on trial with Barnsley and has done enough to land a deal at Oakwell.
The Tykes have confirmed on their website that he has put pen-to-paper on a contract in South Yorkshire. Forward Lewis Gould has also linked up with Conor Hourihane’s side.
Barnsley drew 1-1 at home to Bolton Wanderers last time out. Speaking afterwards, Hourihane admitted to the Barnsley Chronicle that he is looking to bring in some more new faces before the deadline on Monday 1st September: “I would like to rotate more but the depth is probably just not there at the minute. I am very pleased with the people in the building. But there is no getting away that we need a little bit of depth. We’ve got two weeks so it will have to be pretty soon. We’re counting down and so is every club.”
New home for Voldi Mbaya after Sheffield Wednesday exit
Sheffield Wednesday signed Mbaya as a teenager. He joined SWFC at U15s level and he rose up through their academy ranks.
Prior to his switch to Hillsborough, he played for grassroots outfit Hunslet Club. The Leeds-born man signed an apprentice contract in August 2023.

He was a regular for the Owls at various different youth levels during his time at the club. However, he never made a first-team appearance before his departure.
Mbaya will initially team up with Barnsley’s U21s and will be eager to show what he can do. The Tykes will see him as one for the future.
What now for Sheffield Wednesday?
Sheffield Wednesday have lost their first two games of the new Championship campaign. SWFC have been beaten by Leicester City away and Stoke City at home.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday with an away trip to the Racecourse Ground to face Wrexham. Like Henrik Pedersen’s side, the Red Dragons have also been beaten in their first two games.
Phil Parkinson’s men were promoted from League One earlier this year. They went up from the third tier along with Birmingham City and Wrexham but have found the step up tough.
