Passengers checking routes for the 20 or 322 buses will see a notice stating that “until further notice” they are unable to serve High Street Stop B outside the former Wilko unit.

Asked how the issue could have been allowed to last for 12 months, Hertfordshire County Council confirmed the change is now precautionary rather than in response to a current issue.

“Arriva buses have made a decision to divert the bus route due to the bollards controlling entry being unreliable,” a spokesperson.

“The bollards are currently working, but we know that there are long-standing issues with their operation, and we understand why Arriva would rather omit this from their route.

“The safety of residents in our high streets is important to us and the bollards were installed as part of a programme to ensure a separation between people and vehicles in pedestrian areas.”
