Spain’s anti-tourism campaign has continued to backfire spectacularly – with Majorca now announcing it will give FREE GIFTS to visitors. The initative, part of an event dubbed ‘Smile at a Tourist Day’, will see shops across the island hand over gift bags to tourists who make purchases at their stores.

The campaign is being organised by Afedeco, a local retail group which is inviting any shopkeeper who wants to encourage business to take part. The reusable bags will carry the message: “Tourist, go home happy. Be happier returning to Mallorca soon.”

Tourists will be given the bags on February 27 2026. It comes after Adopuma president Onofre Fornés said ‘irresponsible negative messages against tourism’ for the downturn.

He said: “Reduced income, higher operating costs and subdued demand for key services, such as sun loungers and deckchairs, have affected turnover, for example in areas such as Playa de Muro and Can Picafort.”

“Love Mallorca but off to Portugal where they’re more welcoming,” a Brit said. “They got what they asked for,” another social media user warned.

And another typed: “The anti tourist brigade were complaining they couldn’t afford housing due to tourists but here’s the thing, if tourists stop coming there will be less employment so no housing anyway. It needs sensible regulation, putting a cap on visitors.”

And another said: “Nope. Go somewhere else. The world is a big enough place.” And another commented: “Too late – you got what you wante. Tthe people of Majorca have spoken. Now take the pain that comes with no visitors – living standards down, losses of income perhaps loseyour home.”

“Meanwhile in Greece things are booming, tourist numbers are up, local economy is doing great,” antoher said.

And another commented: “What on earth did they think would happen… The economy is going to be in the toilet very soon and they only have themselves to blame.

“Such a shame, fond memories of going to Spain on holiday back in the good old days.”
