Post and logistics company Omniva is temporarily suspending parcel deliveries to the US starting on 20 August. The company justifies this decision on the basis of the new customs tariffs recently imposed and the confusing procedures in the US, Omniva Group said in a statement.
Sven Kukemelk, Interim Chief Commercial Officer of Omniva Group, explained that customers using Omniva currently cannot send goods, parcels, gifts to the US, while letters and documents can be sent to the US from Estonia.
The reason for the suspension of the service is the recent changes in the US customs rules.
“The US has changed the so-called “de minimis” threshold, or the threshold below which goods were exempt from customs duties and other charges. These changes also affect customs clearance procedures, but the implementing legislation is not yet in force. Therefore, Omniva cannot currently guarantee deliveries to its customers,” the company explained.
Jānis Andžāns, the company’s communications manager, told LSM.lv that so far the company has been delivering several hundred parcels per month from Latvia to the USA.
The company promises to resume deliveries to the US as soon as possible. At the same time, the company pointed out that in the future, when the legislation on the application of requirements comes into force, shipments to the USA will become more expensive due to the increase in customs duties.
