Manchester City and Rico Lewis are close to an agreement over a new contract.

Nothing has been signed but all sides are working towards the 20-year-old renewing until 2030 with the Premier League club.

The new contract follows interest from Nottingham Forest, who were previously working on a deal to sign Lewis.

The Englishman’s current deal at the Etihad Stadium is set to run until 2028.

Lewis, capable of operating at right-back, left-back and at the base of midfield, joined City aged eight and has made 94 appearances under Pep Guardiola since breaking into the first team in August 2022.

He has helped his side to lift the Premier League and the Champions League in that time and played 44 times for City last season.

Lewis started City’s Premier League opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, providing an assist for Erling Haaland’s opening goal at Molineux.

‘A show of faith on both sides’

Lewis committing his future to City removes one piece of uncertainty hanging over the club.

Forest had initially enquired about him during talks over the signing of fellow academy product James McAtee and with City having to reduce their squad size, it was unclear whether the club would stand in his way.

But Lewis made clear after impressing in the season opener against Wolves that he “had never imagined” himself playing anywhere else.

Guardiola has always shown an appreciation for Lewis’ understanding of the game, which is why he has made 95 appearances by the age of 20.

However, Matheus Nunes had usurped him at right-back towards the end of the season and he was left out of the FA Cup final squad. A red card in the first game of the Club World Cup robbed Lewis of the next two games and his position in the squad looked uncertain.

This new deal is a show of faith in him but also demonstrates that he believes he will continue to play regularly enough to justify staying at City rather than dropping down a level.

With the World Cup next year, it is a big season for the five-cap England international to stake his claim and he will surely look to lock down the right-back position as his own.
