When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said “I do” on May 19, 2018, it was the royal wedding of the year. Much of the public had eagerly followed the lead-up to the grand event, speculating on the choices the duo would make it terms of their décor, fashion, and entertainment. However, a new book reveals that the festivities may not have been as exciting for the pair’s family members. In his forthcoming book, The Royal Butler, Grant Harrold, who previously worked for King Charles from 2004 to 2011, details how Prince Philip turned to Queen Elizabeth after leaving the ceremony and said “Thank f*** that’s over,” according to The Mirror.

While Harrold no longer worked for the family at the time of the2018 wedding, he was serving as a broadcaster for the nuptials, so he had been invited to watch the royal party leave St. George’s Chapel alongside his partner, Jack Stooks, The Mirror reported. As a result of his positioning, he was able to overhear the surprising statement Philip uttered to Elizabeth as the two departed. While it’s unclear what the former Duke of Edinburgh meant by his words, the outlet noted that the royal had hip replacement surgery in the months prior to the big day. After the operation, he had reportedly said that he was determined to be able to walk by the date of Harry and Meghan’s nuptials.

Philip wasn’t the only one who took issue with an aspect of the duo’s celebration. Ingrid Seward, a royal editor and biographer, previously revealed that Queen Elizabeth had expressed some disapproval over the gown selected by the bride, noting that it was “too white.” According to Seward, the monarch felt that the coloring of the dress wasn’t appropriate for someone who was remarrying. Meghan’s ensemble, which was designed by Givency’s Clare Waight Keller, featured a bateau neckline, three-quarter sleeves, and six meticulously placed seams. The piece reportedly cost $265,000, which the bride herself paid for.

Tension between the couple and Queen Elizabeth had seemingly emerged prior to the big day. In a recent Substack post, Sally Bedell Smith, a royal biographer, detailed how Lady “Liza” Elizabeth Anson, a confidant of the monarch, revealed how Meghan refused to make any decisions without her partner present. “Harry wrote to me and said they were going another way,” Anson told Smith. “He said, ‘I am close to my grandmother, and she is content with this.’ When I spoke with the Queen, she said she is not at all content.” In the same post, Smith noted that Queen Elizabeth was also reportedly annoyed that Meghan wouldn’t disclose any of the details of her dress to her. As a result, many in the family’s inner circle wondered whether the Queen even liked Harry’s soon-to-be wife.
