Wandsworth Council Planning Committee has approved a new student accommodation project at 2 Armoury Way, SW18 1SH.
The redevelopment involves constructing two buildings up to ten storeys high, featuring student accommodation and light industrial spaces. The site will include cycle parking, refuse stores, public realm enhancements, and new vehicle access points.
Developer Downing Living South Limited is leading the project on a 5,739 sqm area, part of the former Fairfield gasholders, decommissioned in 2019. The site is bordered by the SGN/Mitheridge site, National Grid site, River Wandle, Armoury Way, and Swandon Way, which houses a ‘Mr Clutch’ car workshop.
Currently classified as brownfield land, the site has temporary structures and was previously used for a cinema and padel courts with food and drink services.
Councillor Ayers expressed concerns about the small size of the housing units, stating that the thought of nearly 600 students gathering is daunting. Councillor Apps inquired about the provision for hire bicycles on the site, reflecting a growing trend across the borough.
This development aims to transform the area, providing much-needed student housing while integrating light industrial spaces, enhancing the local infrastructure, and contributing to the community’s growth.
The project aligns with Wandsworth’s vision for urban regeneration, offering modern amenities and improved accessibility. The strategic location near Wandsworth Town Centre and the River Wandle makes it an attractive site for future development, promising to revitalise the area and support the local economy.
