US sanctions against the International Criminal Court

Published on August 21, 2025

Statement by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs Deputy Spokesperson (Paris, August 20, 2025)

France was appalled to learn of the new US sanctions against the International Criminal Court concerning four of its judges, including one French judge.

France calls on the United States to withdraw all the sanctions adopted on the basis of the presidential Executive Order of 6 February 2025, which are an attack on the Court and all 125 States Parties to the Rome Statute and are contrary to the principle of the independence of the judicial system.

France expresses its solidarity with the judges targeted by this decision, and reaffirms its unwavering support for the ICC and its staff. Their role is essential in the fight against impunity. In conjunction with its European partners and the other States Parties to the Rome Statute, it is working actively to ensure that the Court is in a position to continue fulfilling its mission independently and impartially, in order to provide justice for the victims of the most serious crimes./.
