Sports Mole previews Saturday’s Championship clash between Wrexham and Sheffield Wednesday, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Newly-promoted Wrexham will welcome Sheffield Wednesday to the Racecourse Ground for Saturday’s Championship encounter.
The two clubs are searching for their first points of the season after losing their opening two league games of the 2025-26 season.
Match preview
Wrexham have made a disappointing start to their first season in the second tier since 1982-83, having failed to take anything from their first two league matches, including a 2-1 defeat in their Championship opener against Southampton.
The Red Dragons bounced back with a penalty shootout win over Hull City in the EFL Cup first round, but they ultimately failed to build upon that success in last Saturday’s home clash against West Bromwich Albion.
Goals from Lewis O’Brien and Sam Smith were not enough as Wrexham fell to a 3-2 loss in their Championship home game of the season.
As a result, Phil Parkinson‘s side will head into the weekend as one of six teams yet to pick up a point in the 2025-26 Championship campaign.
They are now preparing for their first competitive meeting with Sheffield Wednesday since running out 4-1 winners in an EFL Cup tie in August 2006.
Wrexham will want to avoid losing their opening three league games of a season for the first time since 1981-82, and they may fancy their chances of picking up all three points against a threadbare Sheffield Wednesday side.
Sheffield Wednesday continue to be hampered by off-field issues, which led to some fans protesting against Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership at last Saturday’s home game against Stoke City.
The Owls have seen a host of players leave this summer, while they are yet to make a single new addition, partly owing to their current transfer fee ban, which restricts them to just free transfers or loans without fees involved.
As a result, Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen has had to make the best of a depleted squad for the opening three matches of the season, which started with a narrow 2-1 defeat away to recently relegated Leicester City.
They went on to beat Bolton Wanderers on penalties in the EFL Cup, before they slumped to a 3-0 defeat in their recent meeting with Stoke City at Hillsborough.
The Owls will have their work cut out in Saturday’s trip to the Racecourse Ground, although they can draw some inspiration from the fact that they have won each of their last three away league games.
Sheffield Wednesday have also won their previous three away matches against Wrexham, including a comfortable 3-0 victory in their most recent away encounter in September 2004.

Team News
Wrexham are unable to call upon Ollie Rathbone, Andy Cannon and Jay Rodriguez, while they will also have to assess the fitness of Liberato Cacace and George Thomason.
Josh Windass, who arrived from Sheffield Wednesday this summer, will be unable to face his former club after picking up a hamstring injury in the recent defeat to West Brom.
Nathan Broadhead is in line to replace Windass to make his first for the club, while Ryan Longman is pushing to get the nod over Ryan Barnett for the right wing-back role.
Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday defender Nathaniel Chalobah is sidelined after picking up an injury on the opening day of the season.
Goalkeeper Shea Charles has picked up a shoulder injury, throwing the Owls into a goalkeeping crisis ahead of Saturday’s fixture.
Logan Stretch and Jack Phillips are the two available options at the club, but with the youngsters yet to make their first-team debuts, Sheffield Wednesday are looking to sign a new goalkeeper in time for the trip to the Racecourse Ground.
Wrexham possible starting lineup:
Ward; Cleworth, Coady, Brunt; Longman, Dobson, James, O’Brien, McClean; Broadhead, Moore
Sheffield Wednesday possible starting lineup:
Stretch; Valery, Otegbayo, Iorfa, Lowe, Palmer; Fusire, Bannan, Ingelsson; Cadamarteri, Lowe
We say: Wrexham 2-0 Sheffield Wednesday
Wrexham have experienced a difficult start to their Championship campaign, but we think Saturday’s fixture represents a great opportunity to pick up their first league win of the season, with Sheffield Wednesday contending with off-field issues and a threadbare squad.
