Police are currently at the scene of a security alert in north Belfast.

A public safety operation is underway following the discovery of a suspicious device on Victoria Parade in the New Lodge.

It began shortly after 11.30am on Friday morning.

It’s understood around 100 residents have been evacuated.

Police have urged the public to avoid the area at this time.

Sinn Féin councillor JJ Magee has urged people to follow the advice of authorities.

Police launch murder investigation following stabbing incident in west Belfast

“The PSNI is currently dealing with a suspect device in the New Lodge,” he said.

“While this incident is ongoing, I would ask for patience and we hope the area can be cleared as soon as possible.

“Belfast City Council is working to find suitable premises for residents while the alert is going.

“The safety and concerns of the local community must remain paramount.”
