A number of homes and businesses have been evacuated amid an ongoing security alert in north Belfast after a ‘suspicious object’ was discovered.

The device was found in the Victoria Parade area of the city at around 11.30am on Friday morning.

Police have said that a public safety operation remains in place.

“Police are currently at the scene of a security alert in the Victoria Parade area north Belfast,” a spokesperson said.

“A public safety operation is in place following the discovery of a suspicious device shortly after 11.30am this morning, Friday, August 22.

“A number of homes and businesses in the area have been evacuated. North Queen Street is closed to traffic and cordons are in place at the junctions of the New Lodge Road and Henry Street.

“The public are advised to avoid the area at this time.”
