Tributes have been paid to a Trafford councillor described as a ‘wonderful person’ and a ‘champion’ of young people.
The death of Denise Western, who served as a Labour representative for Broadheath since 2012, was announced this evening. Her son, Andrew Western, is the Labour MP for Stretford and Urmston.
Trafford Labour said: “It is with great sadness that we have to announce that our good friend and Trafford Labour colleague, Cllr Denise Western, died peacefully this morning following a short illness.
“Denise was first elected as a councillor for Broadheath in May 2012 and we know local residents and community groups will be saddened by this news.

“She held many roles during her time as a local councillor, including as Chair of Trafford Council’s Children’s Scrutiny Committee. Denise was a champion of children and young people and ensured their voices were heard. Our thoughts are with Denise’s family at this time.”
Coun Tom Ross, leader of Trafford council, said: “Such very sad news today. Denise was a wonderful person, great colleague and supportive friend to all our group members.

“May she rest in peace, my thoughts are with @AndrewHWestern and his family at this time.” In reply on X, Mr Western said: “Thanks Tom – she loved you all.”
Trafford Council said on X: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cllr Denise Western, who died peacefully in her sleep this morning following a short illness. Our deepest sympathies are with Denise’s family and friends at this sad time.”
