A car burst into flames on a Glasgow motorway as drivers were stuck in long tailbacks.

Footage from the scene shows a Mini well alight on the hard shoulder as traffic snakes slowly past the scene on the southbound carriageway.

The incident occurred on the M77 after 8pm on Friday August 22, close to Newton Mearns, between junctions four and five, reports Glasgow Live.

The front end of the vehicle is shown engulfed in flames in the video, with the engine apparently ablaze.

An eye-witness said traffic was backed-up behind the blaze with drivers urged to avoid the route.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed multiple calls had been made to report a vehicle on fire on the hard shoulder on the M77 southbound between junctions 4 and 5 around 8.21pm.

Two fire engines attended and the fire was extinguished.

Firefighters left the scene, with the matter left with Police Scotland who have been approached for comment.
