News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Coastal towns will benefit from plans to strengthen worker protections and increase spending power, the UK Employment Rights Minister said during a visit to Llandudno on Thursday.

Justin Madders met local businesses and employees to discuss the government’s Make Work Pay agenda, which is designed to deliver greater financial security for around 15 million workers nationwide.

He said the reforms would give people more confidence to spend on holidays and days out, boosting industries such as tourism which are vital to North Wales’ economy.

The Employment Rights Bill includes measures to end exploitative zero hours contracts by giving workers the right to guaranteed hours, fair notice of shifts, and proportionate payment if shifts are cancelled or changed at short notice.

Mr Madders said: “If workers have the money in their pockets to spend on holiday, we know that coastal towns like Llandudno can thrive and grow, benefitting both businesses and workers alike.

“That’s why, whether they’re staffing a stall on the seafront or serving tourists in local restaurants, we’re giving these workers the security and fair treatment they deserve – while creating the conditions for growth in partnership with business as part of our Plan for Change.”

The Minister also confirmed the government will consult businesses on how zero-hours reforms are implemented to ensure flexibility is maintained in sectors such as hospitality.

Alongside changes for workers, small businesses in seaside towns will see support through the UK government’s Plan for Small Businesses. This includes simplified licensing processes and improved access to finance, with £4bn available to help seasonal businesses manage cash flow and invest in staff.
