The Volunteer Arms, also known as Staggs Bar, has regularly picked up awards from CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale).
And the pub, which has been run by the same family since 1858, was again raising a glass earlier this month when it was crowned Scotland’s Pub of the Year.
The accolade saw the pub, on the town’s North High Street, recognised at Holyrood.
Colin Beattie, MSP for Midlothian North and Musselburgh, submitted a motion earlier this week, which has been backed by more than a dozen MSPs, including South Scotland MSP Craig Hoy.

The motion reads: “That the Parliament congratulates Staggs Bar in Musselburgh on winning the coveted Scotland’s Pub of the Year award; notes that the prestigious award was given by Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA); understands that Staggs Bar, also known as The Volunteer Arms, has been run by the same family for over 150 years; recognises that Staggs Bar has won multiple accolades on previous occasions, including pub of the year in 1998 and other CAMRA awards; believes that the achievement is down to the hard working and dedicated team, and wishes the owners and staff continuing success in the future.”
The historic pub was named Pub of the Year in the Lothians in 2020, 2022 and 2023.
Previously, it has clinched the title for best pub in Scotland and Ireland and was named Pub of the Year for the UK in 1998.
