Sandy Park rocks as France overpower Italy

Exeter’s Sandy Park was the stage for Women’s Rugby World Cup action on Saturday as France opened their Pool D campaign with a 24–0 victory over Italy.

Supporters were treated to more than just rugby. Former JLS star and DJ Marvin Humes entertained fans before kick-off, helping build a lively atmosphere inside the ground that carried through the contest.

Adding to the sense of occasion was the presence of Exeter’s own Sara Cox, the world’s first female professional rugby referee, who took charge of the match.

After sustained pressure, France broke the deadlock in the 27th minute when winger Joanna Grisez cut inside to score in the corner. Morgane Bourgeois then slotted a penalty just before half-time, sending the French into the break 10–0 ahead.

The second half saw the French forwards take control. Prop Assia Khalfaoui forced her way over from close range before Charlotte Escudero added a third try midway through the half. Bourgeois was flawless from the tee, converting all three tries and adding her penalty for a personal tally of nine points.

Italy never lacked spirit and their defence earned plenty of admiration from the Sandy Park crowd, but problems at scrum and lineout left them on the back foot throughout. Their best chance came from a thrilling break by Alyssa D’Inca and Sofia Stefan, but the French defence held firm on the line.

France’s inside centre Gaby Vernier was named Mastercard Player of the Match after leading from the front with 14 carries, 116 metres gained and nine tackles.

For Exeter fans, however, the lasting memory will be of Sandy Park once again showcasing world-class women’s rugby, with a local trailblazer in Cox ensuring the city was at the very heart of the World Cup.
