Sheffield United and Ipswich Town target Philip Billing is in advanced talks with Danish side FC Midtjylland ahead of a potential £5m deal, according to Mark McAdam.

Sheffield United have stumbled out of the blocks this season, with frustrations growing both on and off the pitch. New SUFC boss Ruben Selles finds himself in urgent need of backing as the summer transfer window nears its close.

After three straight defeats against Bristol City, Swansea City and Millwall, Sheffield United have plenty of work to do. The Blades’ head coach has openly expressed concern over the slow pace of recruitment, intensifying the pressure to strengthen his squad if they are to launch a genuine bid for Premier League promotion.

However, it looks like more bad news for Sheffield United regarding one of their targets. According to Sky Sports reporter Mark McAdam, SUFC target Philip Billing could be moving elsewhere.

Danish side FC Midtjylland are in advanced talks to sign Billing in a deal worth around £5m. Billing looks to be keen on the move to his home country, Denmark.

Ipswich Town are also keen on a move for Billing as they continue their own pursuit of a new midfielder. They have had plenty of setbacks with Middlesbrough Hayden Hackney turning them down, as well as a loan bid for Lewis Miley being rejected.

Sheffield United are still in the hunt for a replacement for Vini Souza. After another defeat this weekend, transfer activity may be increased further.

Philip Billing was always an ambitious move for Sheffield United

Philip Billing began his youth career in his native Denmark before moving to England with Huddersfield Town in 2013. He broke into senior football with the Terriers, becoming a key figure, and later secured a switch to Bournemouth in 2019.

Billing has consistently shown he is a cut above Championship level, impressing in both the second tier and the Premier League. His quality was underlined when Napoli brought him in on loan last January, adding depth to their midfield as they went on to win Serie A.

Now back at Bournemouth but lower in the pecking order, the time looks right for a fresh challenge. If Ipswich Town can strike a deal, Billing would be a major addition in the middle of the park.

A huge gap still to fill for Sheffield United

One of the most significant exits from Sheffield United this summer has been Souza. As expected, he departed following the club’s failure to secure promotion, completing a move to Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg.

The Blades have had ample time to find a replacement for the defensive midfielder but are yet to do so. A move for Billing would’ve helped address the gap in midfield, although he is a more attack-minded profile compared to Souza.

With Souza gone and Hamza Choudhury’s loan spell concluded, Billing would’ve injected much-needed physicality and presence in the middle of the park, alongside Djibril Soumare, for Sheffield United.
