A huge blaze has broke out at a Scots recycling centre.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were alerted to the blaze involving a large quantity of rubbish and some machinery at Lochhead Landfill Site in Dunfermline at around 1:38pm this afternoon, Sunday, August 24.

Four fire appliances raced to the area and 20 firefighters are currently working to extinguish the fire.

The SFRS have asked people to avoid the area as far as possible and urge locals keep windows and doors closed.

Images show plums of black smoke billowing overhead, spreading into nearby housing schemes in the city.

Footage from the scene shows the flames coming from the fire within the premises.

Locals have reported seeing cops at the entrace of the recycling centre, blocking entry.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “We are currently in attendance at Lochhead Landfill Site in Dunfermline after being alerted to the incident at 1:38pm.

“We have four appliances at the scene and 20 firefighters who are working to bring the blaze under control.”

They continued: “Firefighters are working to extinguish a fire involving a large quantity of rubbish and some machinery.

“Please avoid the area as far as possible and, if you live locally, keep windows and doors closed.”

Police Scotland has been approached for comment.
