Marking Ukrainian Independence Day

There was a solemn ceremony at the City Chambers on Sunday morning to mark the Ukrainian Independence Day in Edinburgh. The event was attended by the First Minister, John Swinney and Social Justice Secretary Shirley Anne Somerville along with the Rt Hon Lord Provost and the Provost Consort, and the Ukrainian Consul.

New Cycle Hire Scheme

The new cycle hire scheme in the capital will be operational from 3 September when an initial 50 bikes will be delivered to the city centre and people who have downloaded the app can start hiring them and dropping them off at certain geofenced locations. Eventually there will be 800 bikes in the two year trial scheme. Read more about it here.

Pentland Open Studios Art Trail

Pentland Open Studios Art Trail (POSt) is a new volunteer run creative force concentrating on the area high up on the Water of Leith.

It is a new artist-led initiative celebrating the creativity and community there. The first Open Studios Art Trail takes place on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August 2025, from 10am to 4pm.

Data centre at Heriot Watt

A Proposal of Application Notice has been lodged by Apatura DC Project 11 Ltd to construct a huge data centre campus with a 200 MW demand utility capacity on the green belt. The site will be developed with offices, an electricity substation, cycle and car parking and landscaping on a 24 hectare site north of the Riccarton Campus at Heriot-Watt University.

There are two proposed consultations – the first public consultation event taking place on Thursday, 28 August at The National Robotarium, Heriot-Watt University (Boundary Rd N, Third Gait, Edinburgh EH14 4AS), from 3-8pm.

There will be a second public consultation event at The National Robotarium EH14 4AS on 2 October from 3pm to 8pm.

Although our Fringe coverage is now at an end there are still some shows with final performances today.
