The group explains that a Tram Train is a light rail vehicle that can provide passenger services on both tram tracks in a city street, and on a traditional rail line. It combines the urban accessibility of a tram with a train’s greater speed in the suburbs.
The group sees considerable potential for tram train technology to improve public transport in Edinburgh. They are encouraged by the positive conclusions of a project “The South Sub Tram-Train” that was carried out by Heriot-Watt engineering students earlier this year.
Newly appointed “Tram Trains for Edinburgh” chairperson Rob Falcon said: “The South Suburban railway line is a significant public asset which is currently underused. Using Tram Train technology makes reopening the route much more practical than earlier proposals and could transform public transport across many parts of Edinburgh.”
The group plans to hold a public meeting in the early autumn and can be contacted by email [email protected]
This is just one example of a tram train. The Tram-Train Mulhouse-Vallée de la Thur is a unique concept in Europe. In the city of Mulhouse it uses the tram tracks for 7 km. For the next 15 km between Lutterbach and Vallée de la Thur train tracks are used. For this service 12 Siemens Avantos are used. These are operated jointly by Solëa and SNCF. https://www.flickr.com/photos/harry_nl/39473362722
