A popular Trafford Centre “institution” has closed its doors for good at the giant shopping mall.

Mr Simms “olde sweet shoppe”, known for its collection of nostalgic sweeties as well as an array of American candy, has been a fixture at the Trafford Centre since first opening in May 2014.

Sitting in a prime spot on Upper Peel Avenue, it was a popular stop off for treats for young and old but the shutters went down for a final time earlier this month after 11 years.

The listing for the Trafford Centre shop on google now says “permanently closed”.

The Mr Simms sweet brand is on sale through a host of its named shops across the UK, mostly operating as independent franchises, as well as online.

The branding was still up at the weekend, but the doors completely shuttered and window blanked out.

The nearest physical Mr Simms store is now at The Millgate Shopping Centre in Bury, while fans can also still get the full sweetie range online.

The shop at the Trafford Centre was known for stocking a host of traditional candies as well as more unusual treats.

The Mr Simms brand has become TikTok famous in recent years with their range of sour sweets and its exclusive “Black Death ultra sour” sweets that can only be eaten by over-12s, which are available to buy online and have been going viral across the world.

Trafford Centre bosses have confirmed to the M.E.N. that the Mr Simms sweet shop had come to the end of its lease and that a new, “big name” will be announced to take over the site in the coming days.

The M.E.N. has contacted the Mr Simms group for comment about the Trafford Centre closure.

It comes amid a period of big changes at the shopping centre, with some huge brands opening stores, some moving to larger flagship stores, while others are continuing to be announced in the run-up to Christmas.

Next door to the former Mr Simms shop is a newly-opened Accessorize shop, which has moved from its previous site further along Regent Crescent.

Meanwhile, a few shops along there’s another new name for the centre, with the arrival of luxury chocolate shop Laderach at the Main Dome, opposite Selfridges.

Hoardings for the new brand are now up, with an opening date expected to be announced soon.

The Swiss chocolate company is famed for its chocolate box and gift collections, as well as its “FrischSchoggi” chocolate slabs filled with an array of treats like whisky, pecan, and pistachio.

Further news is also expected soon on the two sites left vacant by the former Zara and Pull & Bear stores, after both shops opened huge new flagships at the former M&S site on Peel Avenue earlier this month, alongside a new Berhska.

Other shops still to open before Christmas include viral K beauty brand PURESEOUL and fashion brand Urban Outfitters.
