With version 2.0, Pixel Studio is now out of “Preview” and adds a versatile image editor that can replace the existing Markup tool.

The conventional tools from Markup are Crop, Draw + Highlight (12 colors), and Caption (21 fonts). Material 3 sliders, shapes, and color pickers are used throughout for a modern experience. Redo, Undo, Share, and Save are placed in pills at the top of the screen.

The first AI tool lets you highlight an area and enter a prompt to change it: “Select an area and describe what you want to add or replace.”

Next up is the Sticker creator that lets you make a new one from what’s in the current image, or add an existing sticker from your library.

Finally, there’s an erase tool to remove parts of an image, with the ability to conveniently inverse the selection.

This new Pixel Studio editor launches when you tap the pencil icon in the corner screenshot preview. It can also be accessed from the system share sheet or from inside Pixel Studio (tap the Gallery to the right of “Create”).

However, some apps like Files by Google and even Pixel Screenshots will launch the old Markup experience when you tap those edit icons. When that happens, there’s a new AI button in the top/app bar. This is presumably an oversight that will get addressed in the future.

Pixel Studio 2.0 is rolling out via Google Play on the Pixel 9 series and 9a. There are no major changes to the image generation half of Studio besides Imagen 4.
