OpenAI’s leadership is emphasizing the company’s immense and continuous need for computing power to fuel its artificial intelligence development. As reported by Yahoo Finance, Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil stated that every new GPU the company acquires is immediately put to use, a sentiment echoed across the C-suite.

CEO Sam Altman has projected that OpenAI will operate more than 1 million GPUs by the end of the year, a scale that dwarfs the 200,000-GPU supercluster used by Elon Musk’s xAI to train its Grok-4 model. The competitive pressure is intense, with Musk himself targeting 50 million units of compute equivalent to Nvidia’s H100 chip within five years. This demand is driven by the fundamental role of computing hardware; executives describe GPUs as a form of “currency” for AI researchers and a crucial tool for recruitment.

The insatiable demand for processing capability is a primary driver behind the launch of Stargate, a joint venture with Oracle and SoftBank with an estimated cost of $500 billion. CFO Sarah Friar explained that the project, along with other large-scale builds, is a direct response to the company being “constantly under compute.” The additional computational resources will be allocated across the organization, from improving existing product features like latency and token generation speed to launching new offerings and expanding user access.
