Average egg price across the European Union (EU) has reached EUR254.76 (US$296.50) per 100kg — an increase of 31.6% over the past 12 months.

This is for week 33, and according to the latest update from the European Commission Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, DG-AGRI published last week.

Compared with the previous week, the price is down slightly. However, the regional market has strengthened even further since mid-July, when the same source reported the year-on-year increase was just over 30%.

Compared with the United States at EUR322.97 at the same point, the EU average is significantly lower. However, the source reports that the bloc’s prices remain well above those in Brazil (EUR132.35) and India (EUR79.83).

Likely reflecting these price trends to some extent, the number of laying hens placed by EU member states has been rising for the past three months. The June total was the highest for a month since at least the start of 2023.

EU expands third-party egg imports, exports

At almost 50,300 metric tons (mt; egg equivalent), the bloc’s egg imports for January-April were 42% higher than in the same period of 2025, according to DG-AGRI, citing data from Eurostat.

The leading source for the EU over this period was Ukraine (37,900mt; +68% year-on-year), followed by the United Kingdom (U.K; 4,540mt; -11%), North Macedonia (2,050mt; +111%) and Argentina (1,960mt; +66%).

For the first four months of 2025, the EU maintained its lead as the world’s top egg exporter.

At close to 137,000mt, the outgoing volume was 13.4% higher than the comparable period last year.

Top destinations for EU egg products were the U.K. (52,400mt: +14% year-on-year), Japan (20,300mt; -4%), Switzerland (16,600mt; -4%), Israel (4,320mt; +25%), and Thailand (3,650mt; -22%).

More stable EU market for poultry meat

The latest weighted average poultry meat price across EU member states is EUR300.02 per 100kg carcass weight, according to the DG-AGRI for week 33 of 2025.

While this is 9.8% higher than at the same point in 2024, it represents dips of 0.6% compared with the previous week, and 0.5% from last month. Throughout the year to date, the average has been higher than in the comparable weeks of 2023, 2024, and the 2020-2024 average.

EU prices are currently significantly higher than in the U.S. (EUR224.17), and Brazil (EUR117.16).

For July and August, the source forecasts higher EU broiler production than in the same months of 2023 and 2024. Indeed, the expectation is for the monthly 900,000-mt milestone to be overtaken for the first time in July.

EU: no.3 in global poultry meat exports

For the period January-April, the bloc maintained its position as the world’s third largest exporter behind Brazil and the U.S.

Based on Eurostat data cited by DG-AGRI, the EU’s outgoing trade volume was close to 682,000mt — 1.2% less than the same period of 2024.

Easily the leading third-party destination for these products was the U.K. (241,000mt; -0.9% year-on-year). Close to 59,500mt (+31%) was shipped to Ghana, 39,600mt (+12%) to the Democratic Republic of Congo, 22,300mt to Vietnam (-16%), and 19,400mt to Ukraine (-11%).

In contrast to exports, imports from outside the bloc were 13% higher year-on-year in the first four months of 2025 at almost 342,000mt.

At almost 117,000mt, Brazil was the leading supplier to the EU, increasing its shipments by 25% compared to January-April of 2024. Other key sources of these products so far this year have been Ukraine (71,400mt; -7%), the U.K. (66,000mt; +11%), Thailand (58,300mt; +10%), and China (21,700mt; +63%).
