Edinburgh residents were amazed to spot Chinook helicopters hovering over homes on Tuesday, August 26.

These most recent sightings mark the latest in a spate of Chinook encounters in recent weeks. Edinburgh Live recently brought you coverage on reports of the aircraft on August 18 and August 21.

Now two of the awesome flying machines have been again snapped while making their way over the city around 4pm.

Photos of the helicopters were taken across the city, including in the Corstorphine and Gorgie areas.

One resident captures images from an attic window of a property in Corstorphine. The image appears to show two Chinook aircraft arrowing across the sky.

Another local captured incredible footage of a Chinook flying low to the ground.

Edinburgh Live understands that an exercise is taking place at Murrayfield Stadium on Tuesday, August 26. Police Scotland and military colleagues will be conducting exercise activity in the area as part of a regular training programme.

The activity involves Chinook aircraft from 28 (AC) Squadron landing at Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium on the back pitches between 3.30pm and 4pm, with Police Scotland firearms officers also in attendance.

Helicopters spotted on August 21 were filmed carrying what seemed to be an artillery gun while the other had a military lorry dangling beneath it as it flew over the south west of the capital.

A local who spotted the aircraft at the time said: “We were travelling along the bypass and I was munching down on my pecan plait when the missus who was driving said look at those helicopters, they’re carrying something.

“And right enough, you could see these big nets dangling from beneath the airborne behemoths. It was pretty crazy to see.

“So I dusted the pastry off t-shirt and whipped out the phone to capture it. We’ve been treated this week with military aircraft, it is class when the Tattoo is on.”

The Chinook has been operational with the RAF for over 40 years and can carry up to 55 troops or up to about 10 tonnes of cargo.

The RAF website states: “The Chinook is an extremely capable and highly versatile support helicopter that can be operated from land bases or ships into a diverse range of environments, from the Arctic to the desert or jungle.

“The aircraft may be armed and is fitted with a suite of self-defence equipment allowing it to operate across the battlespace. Chinooks are primarily used for trooping, resupply and battlefield casualty evacuation (casevac).”

The Ministry of Defense has been approached for comment.
