St Mary Street is one of the most famous streets in Cardiff and is packed full of pubs, bars, clubs, and restaurants. Now, a new name is joining the iconic street and bringing its authentic BBQ food.

Spitfire Barbecue, which already had a restaurant in Bristol, is opening on St Mary Street, between Queer Emporium and Bonnie Rogue’s, and has announced their opening date. They will open on Monday, September 29, serving up coal-fire BBQ food right in the city centre.

The restaurant only cooks their food over coal, with no gas used and owner Billy Steyn, who is from South Africa and very excited to open in Cardiff, explained.

He said: “It’s a mixture of American-style BBQ but also very much influenced by South African food.

“I love all things BBQ, from smoking to direct grilling, all our food is only cooked over charcoal, no gas at all.

“Everything is smoked or grilled over charcoal, the proper, real deal.”

Speaking about why he has decided to open his second restaurant in Cardiff, Billy said: “I’ve always loved Cardiff, Cardiff has got the best vibe and Wales has got the best people… just love the whole atmosphere.”

Spitfire Barbecue has already received a very positive reception from customers.

Billy said: “I just find that Cardiff is very welcoming.

“I was a bit taken aback… in Wales everyone is just super friendly, everyone just wants to help, give some advice and guidance, it is just amazing.

“I found everyone in Wales is just incredible.”
