Merlin returns to the Grand Theatre for the first time since its world premiere performances on this hallowed stage almost five years ago.
The mythical old wizard and trusted advisor to the legendary King Arthur is the inspiration for Northern Ballet’s exciting new production set in a fantastical world of gods and mortals.
Northern ballet’s opulent staging breathes new life into the original story. Award winning choreographer Drew McOnie created this two-hour-long ballet from his own story of the teenage Merlin who uses his stupendous magical powers to unite a warring kingdom. McOnie’s story reimagines such well-known female characters from Arthurian legend as the mystical Lady of the Lake and Morgan La Fae the enchantress.
Grant Olding’s beautifully descriptive music, played live at the world premiere performances by the excellent Northern Ballet Sinfonia, will unfortunately be replaced by recorded music. This is because of Arts Council England funding cuts inflicted on our opera and ballet companies.
Northern Ballet’s world renowned narrative-style infuses every nuance of their wonderfully expressive dancers.
An abundance of magical illusion enhances the visual story-telling as well as creating moments of wonderment. Rachel Canning’s puppetry assist the breathtaking special effects. Some of the most touching moments come in Merlin’s scenes with the Fiery Dragon, a loveable young creature who becomes Merlin’s trusty sidekick. All’s well that ends well and good finally triumphs over evil.
Merlin returns to Leeds Grand Theatre from 13th – 20th September. Visit: https://northernballet.com/merlin for more information and bookings.
