Derry is the cheapest city in the Britain and Northern Ireland for food and drink, according to a new study.

The survey found that the average meal cost just £10.

Next up was the northern English city of Preston where a meal will set you back £12 on average.

This was followed by Sheffield where dinner will cost you £13 on average, and Kingston-upon-Hull, Leicester, and Coventry where a meal will cost you £15 on average in each.

But it isn’t just food where Derry is the best value for consumers.

Thirsty bargain hunters can rejoice as the North West is also home to the cheapest drink in the UK, according to the survey.

The city scores the lowest average price for a beer – weighing in at just £3.97 for a pint.

This is 21% lower than the average across the rest of the UK.

The next most affordable pints can be found in Preston, Kingston-upon-Hull, Coventry and Leicester, where the average cost of a pint is £4.

The top 10 list is rounded off by Sheffield, Stoke-on-Trent, Nottingham, Newport, and, Liverpool where the price of a beer will set you back between £4 and £5.

Meanwhile, a cup of coffee will cost you £3.14 on average in Derry, making it home to one of the most affordable cups.

The survey was commissioned by Fintech firm SumUp in order to find the cheapest destination for food and drink for those planning a staycation.

Corin Camenisch, Product Marketing Lead, at SumUp said: “With an increased focus on domestic travel, as well as the cost-of-living crisis still being prevalent, we wanted to highlight the most cost-effective cities for a staycation in the UK. Not only does this encourage budget friendly travel, but it also encourages local spending and supports local businesses due to extra traffic and tourism.

“While some of the cities in our report are popular hotspots among tourists, we hope to shed insight on budget-friendly locations that can also provide memorable experiences that are rich in culture without breaking the bank.”
