Households across the country are getting a free TV update next week that will be an exciting change for many families, especially for those that are avid sports fans.

Anyone who can access freeview channels, whether this is through an aerial, Sky, or Virgin Media, will now be able to tune in to premium content for completely free as a popular channel is set to provide live coverage of sporting events across the pond.

It has been confirmed that 5 (formerly known as Channel 5) has joined up the CBS Sports and Paramount to bring all of the latest action in the NFL to our living rooms.

As of Sunday, September 7, as part of a multi-year deal, 5 will be showing live coverage of the NFL season, which has not been available in the UK for some time, reports the Express.

Every week throughout the whole NFL season, fans will be able to tune in to two Sunday evening games. The first will be broadcast at 6pm on 5, which will then be followed by the second game at 9pm on 5ACTION.

On game nights the free-to-view channel will be branded at 5NFL and both games each week will be streamed live across the UK.

The premium content doesn’t stop there as it has been confirmed that the broadcaster will also show the Super Bowl in the UK. Households will also be able to watch NFL London and Dublin Games, as well as Thanksgiving Day specials and three playoff games.

For a fun added twist, the live coverage will also feature a game show element to keep households entertained during the American breaks.

Each weekend, NFL coverage kicks off at 5:30pm on 5 and will be hosted by Dermot O’Leary, along with Sam Quek and double-Super Bowl champion Osi Umenyiora.

Aiming to bring in more family audiences, whenever the NFL game stops in the US, 5 promises to keep the fun going by hosting a ‘game within a game’.

This involved two teams of friends and family in the UK battling to win prizes in a series of fast, furious and fun games. These players will be representing the two teams playing that night and can only score points when their team has the ball.

The winning team on the night will then get to play one final game that includes the chance to win a holiday to an NFL city in the US. This entertainment format is set to take place during the first game at 6pm.

Speaking about the Big Game Night show, Dermot O’Leary said: “I’m really excited about hosting Big Game Night – the show combines two of my big loves: entertainment television and American football. I think it will be a really fun, silly and brilliant way to watch the game so I hope people enjoy it.”

However, when viewers switch over to 5ACTION for the second game of the evening, the show will then be hosted by Sam Quek and Osi Umenyiora who will provide more conventional football discussion, commentary and game analysis.

Additionally, they will also be joined by special guests each week to help get into the heart of the action and provide further insights into the game that many sports fans love.

Sam Quek added: “I can’t wait to kick off this new adventure with the NFL on 5! Sharing that excitement every Sunday night with Dermot and Osi is going to be brilliant. The mix of top-class sport and big entertainment is the perfect way for families, fans and newcomers to get involved. I’m so excited to get started.”

The first set of games will kick off on 5 and 5ACTION on Sunday, September 7, from 5:30pm. Both Freeview and Sky users will be able to tune in for free.
